Bordeaux (Region)
Bordeaux is one of the world’s most renowned wine regions, located in southwest France along the Garonne, Dordogne, and Gironde rivers. Known for its history dating back to Roman times, Bordeaux is the birthplace of prestigious wines that have shaped global viticulture. The region is divided into the Left Bank and Right Bank, each producing distinct styles of wine. On the Left Bank, Cabernet Sauvignon dominates blends, while the Right Bank focuses on Merlot and Cabernet Franc.
The region is famous for its classification systems, such as the 1855 Classification of Médoc and Graves, which established Bordeaux as a benchmark for fine wine and classic terroirs. Bordeaux is home to legendary châteaux, producing everything from age-worthy reds and dry whites to sweet wines like those from Sauternes. Its combination of maritime climate, diverse soils, and centuries-old expertise makes Bordeaux a global symbol of elegance and complexity in wine.
The name Bordeaux comes from the French phrase “au bord de l’eau,” which means “along the water”–which it certainly is.
