Merlot
Merlot is a smooth and approachable red grape variety, originally hailing from France’s Bordeaux region. Its name, derived from the French word for blackbird, suggests its deep, dark color. As one of the most widely planted grapes in the world, it’s a key player in famous Bordeaux blends and is grown in regions like California, Chile, and Australia.
Merlot wines are typically medium- to full-bodied, with flavors of plum, black cherry, and chocolate. Softer and less tannic than Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot is often chosen for its velvety texture and versatility. Whether enjoyed on its own or blended, it’s always a crowd-pleaser, ideal for those who prefer a less aggressive red wine with a silky, balanced finish.
