St.-Émilion
St.-Émilion is one of Bordeaux’s most historic and charming wine regions, located on the Right Bank of the Dordogne River. Renowned for its medieval town and UNESCO World Heritage status, St.-Émilion produces wines dominated by Merlot, often blended with Cabernet Franc. The region’s rolling limestone hills and unique soils contribute to its wines’ lush, velvety texture and balance of fruit, earth, and spice.
Unlike other Bordeaux regions, St.-Émilion has its own classification system, revised every decade or so, which includes prestigious designations like Premier Grand Cru Classé A and B. This dynamic approach keeps quality and innovation at the forefront. St.-Émilion’s wines are approachable and elegant, offering complexity and aging potential while maintaining a rich, fruit-forward charm that captivates wine lovers worldwide.
By the way, the spelling convention with the “St.-” is just how the French stylistically abbreviate Saint, connecting the title to the place name. Saint Émilion was an 8th century monk who settled in a cave in this area, and as he drew followers, they settled into what became this town.
